Why- Medicare Supplemental Insurance?
Look at your Medicare card. you will see Medicare part A and it's start date; and if you have chosen to accept part B, you will also see it's start date.
Everyone born in 1929 or later needs 40 Social Security credits (sometimes referred to as a quarter of coverage) to be eligible for retirement benefits.
You can earn up to four credits per year, so you will need to work in at least 10 years to become eligible for retirement benefits. If you get benefits from
Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB), you automatically get Part A starting the first day of the month you turn age 65. If you are under
age 65 and disabled, you automatically get Part A after you get disability benefits from Social Security or certain disability benefits from the RRB for 24
months.
If you get benefits from Social Security or RRB, in most cases, you will automatically get Part B starting the first day of the month you turn 65. If your
birthday is on the first day of the month, your Part B will start the first day of the prior month. If you are under age 65 and disabled, you will
automatically get Part B after you get disability benefits from Social Security or certain disability benefits from the RRB for 24 months. You will get your
Medicare card in the mail about 3 months before your 65 birthday or your 25th month of disability. If you don't want Part B, follow the instructions that
come with the card, and send the card back. If you keep the card, you keep Part B and pay Part B premiums. Medicare pays 80% of approved part B
expenses. Medicare Supplemental Insurance is used to pay the remaining 20%.
